British Citizenship – How to apply?
Having a UK born Father will entitle you to apply for a UK passport directly from the UK High Commission as you are considered to be a UK citizen by decent.
However, if only your Mother was born in the UK, you may have a number of different choices in deciding what to apply for. These choices will be determined by what year you were born in and whether or not you are a Commonwealth citizen. Your choices include; to apply for citizenship by decent, registration as a British citizen or right of abode.
Registration is a matter of applying to register as a British citizen. This application will be sent to the UK to be reviewed by the British nationality Directorate and can take 6-8 months to decide. On completion you will be required to attend a swearing in ceremony where you will be issued with a certificate of registration that you can then use to apply for a UK passport. Although a long process, the result is ultimately a British passport.
The certificate of Entitlement to Right of Abode (ROA) could be described as being one step under having full British citizenship. ROA means that you are entirely free from UK Immigration Control. You can live, work and travel in and out of the UK without restriction. ROA is a stamp which is issued into your passport. It will generally be issued for the validity of your passport. When your passport expires, so will your ROA and you will need to re-apply for it each time you obtain a new passport. You may apply to Naturalise as a British citizen after living in the UK on ROA for five years.
