Canada Immigration with a federal skilled workers permit

The federal skilled workers permit allows for Immigration to Canada for applicants who achieve a pass in the points based immigration assessment of 67 points.


Prospective immigrants to Canada are assessed under the Federal skilled workers permit according to a 6 step criteria. Each of the 6 criteria under the federal skilled workers permit allows for a maximum number of points to be scored, which ultimately provide the required information as to whether immigration to Canada is a viable option for the potential immigrant.

The six criteria that immigrants are assessed under for Federal skilled workers permits are as follows:
  1. Education
  2. Language skills
  3. Experience
  4. Age
  5. Arranged employment
  6. Adaptability


In addition to the 67 points there are some compulsory criteria to the application for a Federal skilled workers permit that must be complied with.

Successful applicants for immigration to Canada under the Federal skilled workers permit must:
  • Prove they have sufficient funds to support themselves for a period of time in Canada if the Federal skilled workers permit is granted
  • Undertake a security check.
  • Undertake and pass the medical examinations.
  • Have at least one year's paid work experience in one of 29 qualified occupations or have arranged employment or be living in Canada for an one year period as a temporary worker or international student.
It should be noted that the Canada Immigration authorities retain the right to approve or reject an immigration application under the Federal skilled workers permit on a substitution assessment.

  • Again this can be at the discretion of Citizenship and Immigration Canada however it is unlikely.

Important facts

The 29 occupations are all Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or Skill Level A (professional occupations) or B (technical occupations and skilled trades) on the Canadian National Occupational Classification list. For Candidates applying under the skilled occupation list, the CIC will limit the number of applications considered for processing to 20,000 per year as a measure to manage the supply of applications with labour market demand. Within the 20,000 limit, a maximum of 1,000 applications per occupation will be considered. The limit does not apply to applicants with a job offer. Federal Skilled Worker applications must now be accompanied by language test results before they will be considered. Decisions on new applications are being made in six to twelve months.
