Obtaining a Visa or Permit for Immigration to South Africa
South Africa immigration is achieved through applying for any one of the temporary residency or permanent residency categories, which are offered by the department of home affairs and outlined in the Immigration Act.
Applications can be made under the following categories:
Business Permit / Visa
Immigration to South Africa under the business permit category is suitable for those seeking to run and ‘’own’’ a business in South Africa. South Africa is ranked very highly in terms of the ease of doing business worldwide and offers plenty of opportunity for the entrepreneur. Applications can be made for both temporary and permanent residency under this category.

Work Permit / Visa
South Africa has implemented an immigration policy, in the provision of work permits, which focuses on skill shortages in the country. As a developing nation there are gaps in the employment market that need to be filled by foreign skills. These encompass many areas but particular sectors that stand out, which include besides others IT, engineering, finance and auditing. Applications would be for temporary residency in the first instance with the opportunity to apply for permanent residency after a 5 years period. However, should the applicant be able to prove exceptional skills an application for permanent residence can be lodged right away.

Spousal and Life Partner Permit / Visa
Spousal and life partner permits are issued to immigrants who are either married or in a permanent relationship with a South African citizen or permanent resident. South Africa does not prejudice against unmarried couples or same sex couples and much the same rules apply in obtaining a life partner permit as a spousal permit. Holders of spousal or life partner permits are able to work in South Africa and do not have to apply for a work permit but a more simple endorsement when securing a job offer. For applicants who can prove the relationship is a minimum of 5 years duration can apply for both temporary and permanent residency, if the relationships is under 5 years only temporary can be applied for until the pivotal 5 year period is reached.

South Africa’s immigration rules for retirees are much friendlier than for many other possible destinations for your retirement years. Our constitution (widely acknowledged to be one of the most liberal in the world) does not discriminate between religious beliefs, sexual orientation or age. Therefore for those thinking of retiring to South Africa need not be concerned with age restrictions, the criteria mainly revolves around the fact that you ca afford to retire and support yourself in South Africa. Applications can be made for both temporary and permanent residency.
