South Africa to Release Blocked Rands

Anyone remember blocked rands? Well those in possession of them surely do. Whilst there is no accurate figure, blocked rand forecasts of between 10 billion and 20 billion rand have been published (as the amount held in blocked rands in South Africa).

Blocked rands originate from the exchange control regulations imposed in South Africa over the last few decades. Emigrants were restricted in terms of the amount of South African rand they could transfer out of South Africa and the remaining assets were held as blocked rands.

The announcement at the interim budget could see this all now change with the proposal to release these blocked rands with no penalties attached.

Not only have blocked rands been a largely passive investment, often decreasing in value, but most emigrants would have preferred to have the use of them in their new country and under their control.

In laymen's terms you will now be free to unblock your rand assets and transfer them to wherever in the world you desire.

A statement is expected from the Reserve Bank in the coming days as to when this will take effect and what the process will be.
