South Africa Visa Applications

Making a South Africa Visa Application, for the purposes of immigration to South Africa, commences with ascertaining the correct Visa category in which to apply and ensuring your eligibility.

What categories can a South Africa Visa Application be made under?

Visa applications, or as they are referred to in South Africa Permits Applications can be made under the following categories:
  • Work – for those who are seeking immigration with a view to taking up paid employment.
  • Business – where the visa applicant is looking to invest into a a self run business.
  • Partners – for spouses and life partners of South African Citizens and Permanent Residency holders.
  • Relatives – where the visa applicant is first kin to a South African Citizen or Permanent Residency holder.
  • Study – or both adult students and minors accompanying parents who are immigrating.
  • Corporate – for companies based in South Africa with a need to recruit a number of individuals to bridge a skill shortage area.
  • Tourist – where the visa applicant is visiting South Africa on vacation
  • Temporary Business – where the visa applicant is visiting South Africa for a short period of time to conduct business.

Making a Temporary Visa application

General information about temporary residence permits

The current immigration act (act 13 of 2002) was implemented on 7 April 2003, and its aims include:
  • Facilitating and simplifying the issuance of permits
  • Regulating the influx of foreigners by facilitating foreign investment and attracting skilled and qualified foreigners to South Africa
  • Promoting tourism to South Africa.

The Department of Home Affairs state that no decision on the issuance of a visa or permit 'is left to the discretion of an official and applicants may lodge an appeal when a decision has been made that will adversely affect them.'

Documents required to apply for a temporary residence visa or permit

The following documentation is stated on their website as being requirements for submission:
  • The correct temporary application form
  • A passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit
  • A photocopy of valid residential permit, if applicable
  • Permit fees (cash or bank transfer)
  • 1 recent passport size colour photograph
  • A vaccination certificate (if the applicant has travelled through or intends travelling to the yellow fever belt)
  • Applicants travelling by air must:
    • Be in possession of a return or onward ticket, or
    • Lodge a cash deposit (to be advised by the foreign mission), or
    • Submit a written undertaking by the prospective employer accepting full responsibility for the costs related to the deportation of the applicant and his family should it become necessary
  • Police clearance certificates for all applicants 18 years and older
  • Medical and radiology reports of each applicant (radiology reports are not required for children under the age of 12 years and pregnant women)
  • An unabridged birth certificate
  • Proof of custody or adoption of a minor, where applicable
  • Consent from the parents of a minor, where applicable
  • A marriage certificate, where applicable
  • Proof of a spousal relationship by means of affidavit
  • A divorce decree or proof of legal separation, where applicable
  • A death certificate in respect of a late spouse, where applicable.

Extending the validity of a temporary residence visa or permit

Where there is a requirement to extend the temporary residence visa or permit, this has to be done at least 30 days prior to the expiry of the permit and can be facilitated at any Department of Home Affairs office in South Africa.

Making a Permanent Visa Application

General information about permanent residence

Applications for permanent residency in South Africa are again considered in terms of Immigration Act 2002 (Act No 13 of 2002). The Department of Home Affairs states 'in terms of granting Permanent Residency Permits, emphasis is placed on immigrants who are in a position to make a meaningful contribution to broadening the economic base of South Africa.'

Documents required to apply for a permanent residence visa or permit

The following documentation is stated on their website as being requirements for submission:
  • The correct application form
  • A full set of fingerprints
  • A marriage certificate / Proof of spousal relationship, if applicable
  • A divorce decree / proof of legal separation, if applicable
  • Proof of custody of a minor, if applicable
  • A death certificate for a late spouse, if applicable
  • The consent of parents in the case of minors
  • Proof of judicial adoption of a minor, if applicable
  • Police clearance certificates for all countries in which you resided for a period of one year or longer since your 18th birthday
  • A valid temporary residency permit (if already in South Africa).
