The highly skilled migrant programme was designed to encourage professionals to enter the UK work market or set up a business.
The highly skilled migrant programme is no longer available to new applicants. The HSMP, as the highly skilled migrant program was commonly referred to as, has been replaced by the UK Tier 1 visa.
This new form of high skilled migrant program is now legislated for under a points based system and highly skilled individuals will need to apply under the new Tier 1 category.
There are a number of similarities between the old highly skilled migrant program (HSMP) and the New UK Tier 1 visa:
You do not need to have a job offer from a specific employer
It is aimed at facilitating the inflow of highly skilled professionals to the UK
It is based around much the same criteria – education, age, experience, earnings and English language ability
