The marriage visa (SPOUSAL VISA) is for spouses of UK citizens (or holders of UK settlement visas) and enables them to obtain a visa to join their married or unmarried spouse in the UK.
UK Marriage visas will be issued on the basis that the couple are lawfully married, intending to live with each other in the UK and are able to support themselves and dependents without recourse to public funds. This visa will normally be issued for 2 years unless the applicant can prove that they have been married for longer than 4 years in which case they will be issued with permanent residence in the UK.
At the end of the 2 year period an application can be made to extend the visa or to apply for permanent residence in the UK.
Spouses of EU citizens may apply for an entry clearance visa to live and work in the UK. In most cases a 6 month visa will be issued by the British High Commission outside the UK and then a five year family permit will be required to be applied for once inside the UK.
