The UK Tier 1 visa , under UK Visa regulations was formerly known as the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP). The Tier 1 visa, as it is now known, was launched on the 1st of July 2008. UK Visa Tier 1 - Who can apply?

For applicant’s seeking to immigrate to the UK, applying for a UK visa under the Tier 1 category allows you to work or establish a business without needing to have a job in the UK already arranged.

Successful applicants under the UK visa – Tier 1 category will be granted a visa for three years with the option to extend for a further two before being granted permanent residence for the UK.

Applying for a UK Visa Tier 1

The Tier 1 visa works on a points system with 95 points being required in order to qualify. For most applicants the qualifying criteria works off three main areas, these are; academic qualifications (bachelors degree minimum), age and previous earnings.

In addition to this applicants will need to demonstrate that they have a suitable level of English language skills and that they have a reasonable amount of available savings to support themselves on arrival.

UK Visa Tier 1 - Points based system

Applicants for the Tier 1, UK visa need to score a minimum of 95 points to qualify. There are various categories that immigrants can score points in, these include:
  • Qualifications: To score any points under this category, when making your UK visa application, your qualification needs to be at least equivalent to a Bachelors Degree. The higher your qualification the more points you will score.
  • Age: The younger the applicant for a UK visa the more points scored.
  • UK experience: Applicants for the UK visa Tier 1 who have previous experience of the UK (work or study) will score more points.
  • Earnings: The UK Visa Tier 1, looks at your previous earnings over a recent 12 month period. Applicants with high earnings will score more points.
To prove these criteria, you will be required to provide extensive and detailed documentation in support of the application. A significant number of applications fail because the applicant has not provided sufficient documentary evidence to support their case.

The younger you are, the more points you can score. You can score a maximum amount of 20 points if you are under 28 years of age. Points scored according to age are as follows:

UK Visa Tier 1 - English Language Proficiency

Applicants for a UK visa under the Tier 1 category need to demonstrate adequate levels of English language skills. 10 points are awarded to your score by providing successful proof of this.

Proof of this can take the following forms:
  • English equivalent to level C1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework for Language Learning (equivalent to a grade C or better at GCSE or an approximate overall band score of 6.5 on an IELTS exam)
  • The country you are emigrating from has English as the predominant language, these countries include: - Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, , Trinidad and Tobago, the USA.
  • Obtaining a degree taught in English from a list of select countries, verified by using the National Academic Recognition Information Centre data. The countries include Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK, the USA.
Successful proof of one of these criteria will earn you the required 10 points for the English language requirement.

UK Visa Tier 1 - Required available funds

It is required that you score 10 points by providing you have funds available to support yourself for the first few months. The amount you need to show varies depending upon whether you are applying from within the UK or outside.
  • If you applying within the UK you need to show proof of £800 at all times for three months prior to your UK visa, Tier 1 application.
  • If your application is made from outside the UK you need to show proof of £2800 at all times for three months prior to your UK visa, Tier 1 application.

UK Visa Tier 1 - Porving sufficient required funds are available

When making the visa application, proof of having the required available funds can take the form of:
  • Bank statements (original)
  • An official letter from the bank
The above must be presented in a certain format that includes being on the official letter head of the organisation, showing your name, account number, date of the statement and being for the duration of the three month period.
