UK Working Holiday Visa - Rules

The review of the UK working holiday visa is part of sweeping changes to the UK visa legislation that are coming into effect during 2008.

As the UK adopts a point based immigration system and it tightens up on immigration procedures, the favoured UK working holiday visa is to be replaced with the Youth Mobility Scheme.

Millions of youths from around the world have taken advantage of the opportunity to travel to the UK and fund this by having the opportunity to be able to work.

For South Africans there is every chance that the replacement of the UK working holiday visa, the Youth Mobility Scheme, will no longer be an option.

Popular opinion is stating that the new Youth Mobility Scheme legislation will be based around a reciprocal agreement between the UK and other countries. In layman’s terms this means applications will be accepted from citizens of countries that offer a similar visa to the youth of the UK.

It seems highly unlikely that South Africa ill be able to participate in such a scheme due to its high unemployment rate hence meaning it youth will not be able to apply for the new Youth Mobility Scheme.

It may not all be despair for South African though as there are various options that they may qualify under including:

The UK Tier 1 visa for skilled migrants

The UK Tier 2 visa for those South African who have a job offer

The UK ancestral visa for those South Africans who have a grandparent born in the UK

The UK spousal visa for South African married to a UK or EU citizen.

The UK Fiancé / Fiancée visa for South Africans engaged to be married to a UK or EU citizen

The UK unmarried partners visa for South Africans who are in a permanent relationship with UK or EU citizens for a period of a t least 2 years.
