3 Ways to meet people in a new country

Living in a new country can be an isolating experience. But here’s the thing – it doesn’t have to be for you! There are so many community, hobby and expat groups in South Africa. You’re bound to connect with someone with the same interests in no time at all.

To get you started, we’re sharing three online platforms that lets you make new connections in the real world. While Internations connects expat specifically, Meetup and Facebook groups creates opportunities to meet just about anybody in your city.

1. Internations

Internations is the ‘largest international community for people who live and work abroad’. Roughly 6 000 events and activities are held monthly in 420 cities across the world, where expats get to meet other internationals in their city. This creates opportunities for networking, connecting with like-minded people and exchanging tips about living in the country.

In South Africa, you’ll find Internations communities in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Port Elizabeth. The easiest way to find a group is from the South African section on the Internations website. Internations is also active on Facebook and Instagram.

2. Meetup

The first message you see on Meetup’s website is ‘Join a local group to meet people, try something new or do more of what you love’. All you have to do is create a free account. It couldn’t be simpler really! You can search for groups in your area once you’re set up. Once you’re set up, you can search for groups in your area. You’ll find groups covering a wide variety of interests, ranging from fitness and career development to the arts and the outdoors.

You can join as many groups as you like! Can’t find a group that you’d like to join? You can also start your own group.

Meetup groups exist all across South Africa, not just in the big cities. You can see the full list on Meetup.

3. Facebook groups

Facebook introduced a brand-new way to connect with friends when it launched. Today you can join neighbourhood groups, sports clubs, parent groups, industry communities, and expat groups to meet people. New groups are created almost daily. You’ll be spoilt for choice!

Finding Facebook groups is as easy as typing what you’re looking for in the search bar. For example, try ‘running clubs near me’. You’ll immediately see a list of clubs in your area.

Go on – contact a group in your area today. Even it makes you uncomfortable! You could make new friends or at least try something new. Either way, it’s a win if you ask us.
