South Africa’s new critical skills work visa and permit category makes it possible for certain tradespeople to qualify to live and work in the country.

The new 2014 South Africa immigration act has come under fire for closing the door to foreign workers who don’t hold what many have dubbed ‘middle-class skills’ – those skills that generally come with holding a higher degree from tertiary education.

In reality though, the new critical skills category, a grouping that grants a visa to people who have expertise that’s vital to the South African economy, is making it easier for certain artisans and tradespeople (like mining and construction workers) to get a job than ever before.

In past, these types of workers would have to negotiate the requirements for the general work visa or the exceptional skills visa, meaning it would be necessary to secure a job without a visa (a difficult task) or prove exceptional status (another complex challenge). APPROVALChange is no easy thing to deal with. As human beings, we’re even programmed to keep as much constant as possible to maintain homeostasis, our bodies’ own anti-change mechanism. As you might know the South African immigration regulations are going to change soon.

The Department of Home Affairs has contracted an external company (VFS Global) to open visa application centres (VAC) across South Africa.

That means that in future foreign nationals have to appear in person at VFS centres to submit their applications and biometric data. They will no longer submit their applications to the regional offices of the Department of Home Affairs.

The new VACs will open in Cape Town, Durban, George, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Mangaung, Nelspruit, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Rustenburg and Pretoria. Read more What you need to know about upcoming changes in South African immigration law
