Travelling with your South African permanent residence certificate

south african permanent residenceIn 2015 the process for issuing proof of South African permanent residence changed.

Up to that point, permanent residents received a stamp or sticker in their passport as endorsement of their residency status.

South Africa’s new critical skills work visa and permit category makes it possible for certain tradespeople to qualify to live and work in the country.
South Africa’s new critical skills work visa and permit category makes it possible for certain tradespeople to qualify to live and work in the country.

The new 2014 South Africa immigration act has come under fire for closing the door to foreign workers who don’t hold what many have dubbed ‘middle-class skills’ – those skills that generally come with holding a higher degree from tertiary education.

In reality though, the new critical skills category, a grouping that grants a visa to people who have expertise that’s vital to the South African economy, is making it easier for certain artisans and tradespeople (like mining and construction workers) to get a job than ever before.

In past, these types of workers would have to negotiate the requirements for the general work visa or the exceptional skills visa, meaning it would be necessary to secure a job without a visa (a difficult task) or prove exceptional status (another complex challenge). Critical Skills Visa Makes It Easier to Work And Live in South Africa Than Ever Before

APPROVALChange is no easy thing to deal with. As human beings, we’re even programmed to keep as much constant as possible to maintain homeostasis, our bodies’ own anti-change mechanism. But often, the greatest opportunities can arise from what can appear to be the most challenging of shifts. And such is the case with South Africa’s 2014 immigration legislation revision.

While the overhaul created some hurdles, the advent of the new law’s critical skills visa brings with it the chance for certain workers to find a job and seamlessly settle in South Africa easier than ever before.  Read more Critical Skills Visa Makes It Easier to Work And Live in South Africa Than Ever Before

Already obtained a South African visa or permit?

CONFIDENTIALAre you aware of the ongoing requirements once your visa or permit has been granted?

Qualifying for a visa in South Africa is one thing, but being able to keep it is another. Often visa applicants receive poor advice upon application which hampers their understanding of the necessary ongoing requirements.

Many people are unaware of the ongoing requirements after their visa has been issued.  Visa holders assume that once they receive their visa it is a once off process and nothing else needs to be done thereafter, as sometimes their immigration company does not even tell them.

We at Intergate know it is not a once off process and are there for our clients in respect of all their ongoing needs. Read more Already obtained a South African visa or permit?

civil-engineer1Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor, recently spoke at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation Africa Engineering Week at the University of Johannesburg.

She also stated that despite the high number of students enrolling in engineering each year, South Africa only produces approximately 1 500 engineering graduates yearly – of which only about half go on to practice engineering. Read more South Africa needs more engineers

Overstaying your Visa in South Africa / Undesirable

We had numerous questions and phone calls from concerned individuals that are here in South Africa and have overstayed their current visa expiry date, and in so doing run the risk of being declared an undesirable person.

Below we go through the most frequently asked ones:

What is the background to this new rule?

As with most countries, South Africa wishes to ensure that individuals do not overstay the validity period of the permit they have been granted.

There is nothing abnormal about this and every country will have in place ‘deterrents and punishments’ where someone does digress.

The theory of declaring someone an undesirable person if they overstay their permit is therefore correct. The punishment of declaring an individual may be considered harsh but many other countries impose similar consequences. Read more Overstaying your Visa in South Africa / Undesirable
