Top 5 things to do in South Africa during summer

The weather is finally warmer! This means it’s time to head outdoors and enjoy the best of what South Africa has to offer. We asked our team what their favourite summer-time activities are and put together a top five list. Hopefully you’ll find some inspiration for your South African summer!

1. Go to an outdoor movie or concert

There are few things more enjoyable than listening to music or watching a movie in the open air.

If music is your thing, head to Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on a Sunday. Up north, you can go to the monthly Park Acoustics festival at Pretoria’s Voortrekker Nature Reserve. Both venues allow you to pack your own picnic basket.

More of a movie buff? Then look up The Galileo Open Air Cinema in Cape Town or The Bioscope in Johannesburg. You can catch cult classics as well as independent films.

2. Take a sunset stroll along a promenade

Cape Town’s Sea Point Promenade is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. It starts at Mouille Point near the Waterfront and runs along the water’s edge to Sea Point.  At sunset you’ll see friends and families walking, running or cycling the length of the promenade, catching up at the end of their day.

If you find yourself in Durban, the place to be is the promenade along the popular Golden Mile. The Golden Mile is a popular stretch of beachfront which runs roughly from UShaka Beach, where UShaka Marine World is, to the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World.

3. Hop on a sightseeing bus

A bus tour is the easiest way to get to know all our major cities: Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. All buses have open tops and have multiple stops along the way. You simply hop off where you want to see more and hop on the next bus when you’re done exploring.

4. Zip line through a forest

Canopy Tours South Africa has zip lining adventures all around the country. Beginners can head to the Garden Route to zip line in Tsitsikamma while thrill seekers should go to Karkloof Canopy Tours in Durban. Trust us – a canopy tour is an experience you won’t easily forget!

5. While away the day on the beach

This list would not have been complete without mentioning our beaches. There are more than 40 Blue Flag beaches along our coastline! A Blue Flag is an international award given to beaches that meet excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards. In short – South Africa offers some of the best beach experiences in the world.
