As many readers are no doubt painfully aware, the Department of Home Affairs is once again failing to provide application outcomes within a reasonable time frame, with many visa applications taking well over 6 months to be finalized.
In an attempt to address the impact of this lack of service delivery, the Department announced a temporary visa extension for applicants on 1 April 2022. This news is sure to please anxious applicants who are nearing the expiry dates of their current visas.
Applicants whose waiver applications are still pending:
Home Affairs has extended the visas of foreign nationals whose waiver applications are still pending until 30 June 2022. This extension will give the Department time to process waiver applications and for applicants to collect their outcomes and submit applications for appropriate visas.
Those applicants who want to abandon their waiver applications and depart from South Africa will be allowed to leave SA before or on 30 June 2022 without being declared undesirable.
Applicants whose visa applications are still pending:
Home Affairs has also extended the visas of foreign nationals who are waiting on visa application outcomes until 30 June 2022, and applicants who wish to abandon their application will also be able to leave South Africa before or on 30 June 2022 without being declared undesirable at the border.
Travelling during the upcoming Easter holidays:
Visa applicants with pending long-term visa applications who originate from visa-waiver countries may travel outside of South Africa during the upcoming Easter holidays but must present their VFS receipts to border control upon departing South Africa, and again on arrival to gain entry back into South Africa.
However, those applicants with long-term visa applications who originate from countries that are visa restricted must have a port of entry visa in addition to their VFS receipt to be admitted back into South Africa.
