A South African passport gets you into some countries with nothing more than a stamp at the border, and into others only with a visa issued before you fly. The United Kingdom, the Schengen area and the United States are all in the second group, and each runs its own process, fee, biometrics and lead time. The figures below were checked against each government’s own site in September 2026.
First, check whether you need a visa at all
Visa rules are set by the country you are visiting, not by South Africa, and they change. Start with the destination’s official immigration or foreign-affairs website, and be careful with commercial sites that look official. Several websites currently offer South Africans a UK electronic travel authorisation (ETA), for example, but South Africa is on the UK’s visa national list, which means a visa is needed for any visit. An ETA is not an option on a South African passport.
Then check your passport. Most countries set a minimum validity beyond your trip. For the Schengen area, the passport must remain valid for at least three months after the date you leave. A visa is tied to the passport it is issued in, so if yours is close to expiry, renew it before you apply rather than after. South Africans living overseas can now do that at Home Affairs service centres abroad in a growing number of cities.
How a visa application usually works
The details differ, but most visa-required destinations follow the same sequence.
- Choose the right visa. Tourism, business meetings, transit and family visits can fall under one visitor category or several. A business trip that involves paid work usually needs something other than a visitor visa.
- Complete the application online and pay the government fee. Many destinations use a commercial visa application centre, such as VFS Global or TLScontact, which charges its own service fee on top.
- Attend an appointment to give fingerprints and a photograph, and hand in or upload supporting documents: typically your itinerary, proof of accommodation, recent bank statements, a letter from your employer or proof of business, and travel medical insurance where it is required.
- Wait for the decision, then collect your passport or receive it by courier.
Schengen visas for South Africans
A short-stay Schengen visa covers up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen countries. According to the European Commission’s guidance:
- The visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12.
- You can apply up to six months before your trip and must apply at least 15 days before it.
- A decision normally takes 15 days, and can take up to 45 days where more documents or checks are needed.
- You apply at the consulate of the country you will visit. If you are visiting several, it is the country where you will spend longest, or the first one if the stays are equal.
- Fingerprints are taken when you submit, and you need medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation.
At the border itself, the EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. It replaced passport stamps with a digital record, and it records your facial image on your first entry (your fingerprints are already on file from your visa application), so allow extra time at passport control on that trip.
UK visitor visas
South Africans need a visa for every visit to the United Kingdom. The Standard Visitor visa costs GBP 135 for a stay of up to six months. The earliest you can apply is three months before you travel, and you will usually get a decision within three weeks of attending your appointment, where your fingerprints and photograph are taken. If you visit regularly, you can apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa instead.
US visas
South African citizens need a visa to visit the United States, usually a B1/B2 visitor visa, and most applicants attend an interview at a US consulate. Since 1 August 2026, the consulate in Durban no longer offers routine visa services, so applicants in South Africa book at Johannesburg or Cape Town. The US Embassy’s visa information page carries the current position. Check the fee and the appointment wait there before you commit to dates: the wait for an interview is often the longest part of the process.
Ireland, Canada and transit stops
Two more destinations catch South African travellers out. Ireland is not part of the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa does not cover it, and Ireland has required a visa from South African nationals for all travel since 10 July 2024. Canada lists South Africa among the countries whose citizens need a visitor visa, so its electronic travel authorisation is not an option either.
Check connections too. Some countries require a transit visa even if you never leave the airport, and the rule depends on your nationality and the airport, not only on your final destination.
What visitor visa decisions turn on
Visitor visa decisions usually turn on two questions: can you pay for the trip, and will you leave when it ends. Recent bank statements that show a steady income rather than a large deposit made just before you apply, a letter confirming your job and your approved leave, and a return booking all answer those questions. If you are travelling on business, a letter from your employer explaining the meetings and who pays for the trip does the same work.
Working out your lead time
Plan backwards from your departure date:
- Passport: renew first if it is close to expiry or short of blank pages.
- UK: you cannot apply more than three months ahead, and should allow at least three weeks after your appointment.
- Schengen: apply as soon as you have your itinerary, within the six-month window, and no later than 15 days before travel.
- United States: check interview availability before anything else, because it sets the pace.
Book flights and accommodation that can be changed or cancelled until the visa is in your passport. Many application forms ask whether you have ever been refused a visa, so a refusal stays on your record for later trips.
